Cambridge PhD programme is a 3-6 year long course, depending on grant duration. There are over 50 Departments and Faculties across the University offering graduate study opportunities in all fields of knowledge, so there really is no limit to what you can study. The only exception would be if your proposed topic were deemed too similar to an existing project by another student, which may occur in some departments but not others it depends on how much innovation they require from prospective researchers.
